Located between the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Department of State, and adjacent to the National Academy of Sciences, the site for APhA headquarters was authorized by an Act of Congress in 1932 and is the only privately owned building on the National Mall. The original structure is known as the Pope building, after architect John Russell Pope — also responsible for the Jefferson Memorial, National Archives, National Gallery of Art, and Constitution Hall.
The dedication was held May 9, 1934. Twenty-five years later, APhA broke ground for an annex, completed in 1960. Plans for a new addition were unveiled at the 2001 Annual Meeting. The new building — six floors above grade, two below, and two parking levels — increased APhA's gross building area from 31,000 to 359,026 square feet. It was dedicated November 13, 2009.
APhA selected Hartman-Cox Architects, highly respected for neoclassical architecture, and pursued LEED Gold certification. Construction required blasting the two lowest levels from solid rock, with seismographs installed in surrounding buildings to monitor vibration levels.

APhA pursued and achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building features exceptional groundwater management systems and was designed for long-term sustainability and resilience, sitting atop a solid rock shelf.
