The five-dollar bribe

“A 6-year-old will do anything for $5,” my mom must have thought to herself as she slid the $5 bill across the kitchen table 19 years ago. That’s all it took to get me to join my sister and cousins at the McAleer School of Irish Dance in Wilmington, DE, where we learned from the same instructor who taught my mom and her sisters how to dance. Soon after, my dad built a wooden stage in our basement so I could practice at home.

Looking back, I probably spent more time down there than in my own bedroom.

Meet your 2018–19 APhA–ASP National Executive Committee

Nimit Jindal, President
Hi everybody! I just want to say I am so honored and humbled to serve as your APhA–ASP National President this year. I was born in the beautiful Cataract City, Niagara Falls, Canada, in 1995, and immigrated to the United States in 1998. I attended Morris Hills High School in New Jersey, and after I graduated, I went to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. As a student pharmacist, I became enthralled with the student organizations on campus and tried to become as active as I could. My first year I was a member of NCPA, Class Council, and the Rutgers University Debate Union. It wasn’t until my second pre-professional year that I learned about APhA–ASP and have been an active member ever since. Throughout my time in pharmacy school, I have been so fortunate to have been able to serve in a variety of chapter roles, including Chapter Delegate, Policy Committee Chair, and Policy Vice President. I have even had the opportunity to serve the profession and gain valuable leadership skills as an APhA–ASP Regional Delegate. Last year, I was honored to serve as the APhA–ASP National President-elect, where I helped students around the country to Begin Your Legacy. This year, I am so excited about serving alongside our extraordinary National Executive Committee (NEC) and APhA staff as the APhA–ASP National President to inspire and empower student pharmacists to Embrace Your Calling! I am so excited for everything that the next year has in store.

Is there a new practitioner in the house?

The APhA Student & New Practitioner Development Department strives to enhance the professional and personal development of student pharmacists while in pharmacy school so they are prepared for the first day of their new careers and beyond. This is accomplished through providing tools and resources, both online and during live meetings. We also rely on the help of new practitioner leaders who like nothing more than to pay it forward as part of the mentor–mentee relationship.

While at APhA2018 in Nashville, our expert panel of recent graduates graciously sat down with Student Pharmacist staff to discuss issues of critical importance, including workplace challenges, time management strategies, and even the soothing therapeutic value of a good bath.

An investment mentality

Recently, I had the opportunity to write an article for the February issue of Transitions, titled “Finding your best ‘yes’ as a new practitioner.” Shortly thereafter, I was asked to write a version for Student Pharmacist, since juggling responsibilities and opportunities is something that I struggled with far before adding the PharmD to the end of my name. My hope is to encourage you to make the most of your time as a student pharmacist. The approach I took during my 4 years of grad school is not the only approach, but it wound up working well for me.

Connections and community

There are few experiences in my time as a student pharmacist that have had as forceful an impact on me as the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition. I could never pinpoint exactly what draws me back each year, until APhA President Nancy Alvarez, PharmD, provided her opening address in Nashville. APhA’s Annual Meetings are about connections and the community. I am reminded of the new connections I make over the course of just a few days every March, and how my enthusiasm for pharmacy is refreshed.
