Shape pharmacy practice in your state

Provider status is one of the most important pieces of legislation to each and every pharmacist. Pharmacists and student pharmacists across the country are working to raise awareness and convince their legislators to pass H.R. 592 and S.314, however, there is even more that can be done.

Within the past year, several states have announced the different ways they have implemented a state pharmacist provider status program. These programs allow pharmacists to expand their scope of practice in different ways. Behind each of these changes has been a driving force of pharmacists and student pharmacists alike.

Growing the field of pharmacy

On the plains of North Dakota, it is well known the amount of hard work and dedication it takes to harvest crops on frozen, unrelenting soil. Looking back at this past year, it is clear that North Dakota pharmacists not only know a thing or two about medication management, but also about sowing the seeds for future pharmacy practice.

Pharmacy practice in North Dakota has always had a unique presence in the country. The Pharmacy Ownership Law in North Dakota states that a pharmacy must be 51% owned by a pharmacist or group of pharmacists. This unique practice climate has thrust North Dakota pharmacy into the legislative spotlight numerous times. It is no surprise that during this past year, the profession has made great strides in implementing progressive laws.

Front row seat for important policy discussions

As a final-year student pharmacist, I have had the opportunity to appreciate different sides of practice that I knew very little about prior to beginning rotations in May. Each of my rotation experiences has provided me with unique opportunities for personal and professional growth, but none of these was more unique than the APhA Experiential Program. Among the many exciting opportunities I had as an APhA Experiential student with the Student and New Practitioner Development Department, I had the distinct honor of attending sessions during the September APhA Board of Trustees meeting.

Taking advocacy one step at a time

The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy came into existence because of pharmacists and community members who advocated for a pharmacy school in northeast Tennessee. Advocacy helped establish our college and will change the way we practice when we graduate. Our APhA–ASP Chapter has found ways to inspire student pharmacists to become advocates one step at a time at the local, state, and national level. This course of action led us to
receive the 2013–14 APhA–ASP Chapter Policy And Legislative Award at APhA2015 in San Diego.

Provider status is about patients

This year in APhA–ASP, each student pharmacist is challenged to “Live Your Why.” As a final-year student pharmacist, I can say with certainty that my “why,” my raison d’etre, my reason for getting out of bed in the morning, centers on two things: serving my patients and advancing my profession. I am particularly passionate about pharmacists’ pursuit of provider status because I know that in this one campaign, those two “whys” are combined.
