PINK colors and beyond

PINK events, the creation of Nhung Nguyen (left), have enjoyed huge success at Rosalind Franklin University.

APhA–ASP provides a unique place for student pharmacists to cultivate ideas into actionable projects, events, and policies. What drives the Academy is the amazing student ideas for serving the community and advancing the profession. As future pharmacists, it is up to us to shape the profession in which we want to work, live, and grow.

During my time as the APhA–ASP Chapter President at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science College of Pharmacy, I wanted to leave behind a legacy that would help our chapter and its members grow for years to come. When I was first introduced to the Women’s Health Campaign initiative at the 2018 ASP Summer Leadership Institute, a flame ignited within me and I knew I found my passion. My primary goal for the chapter was to initiate the Women’s Health Campaign and to mold it into its own operation before the end of my term.

Purpose through pandemic

APhA–ASP Chapters have put the “Stronger Together” mantra into action.

If you would have told me 2 months ago that I would be completing my last months of pharmacy school rotations confined to this desk at home due to a worldwide pandemic, I would have said you were crazy. Nevertheless, here I sit, on the cusp of adding PharmD with a Master’s in Virtual Meetings to my credentials. If you are a final-year student pharmacist like me, you may feel cheated out of the culmination of what has been years of blood, sweat, and tears leading up to this moment.

In dynamically unprecedented times like these, it is easy to lose perspective. Why did we do this? Was it for the cap and gown? Was it for the walk across the stage? Or was it for the fancy social media post showing all our friends and family our accomplishments? For many, I would hope the choice was for the person on the other side of the counter; the person who may consistently mispronounce the name of their prescribed medication, or may not understand what it’s for or how it works.

It has been nearly 100 years since we have experienced anything quite like COVID–19. The world is a lot smaller now than it was then. Add technology, travel, and 6 billion more people on the planet and you have yourself an outbreak scenario that would have seemed unfathomable during the 1918 flu pandemic.  What a time to be on the front lines and an integral part of the health care team. Currently, student pharmacists across the country are not only adapting to socially distanced education, but many are finding new and innovative ways to make a positive impact on their communities.

Challenged to face change head on

WCU student pharmacists Alexandra Pellerin (left) and Hannah Eagles represent the chapter at the recent American Heart Walk.

The William Carey University School of Pharmacy (WCUSOP) in Biloxi, MS, is the second PharmD program in the state and the first accelerated program in the region, from New Orleans, LA, to Pensacola, FL. The 2-year, 10-month program offers the opportunity for students to gain clinical knowledge and experiences to begin providing health care to communities sooner than a traditional program. With leadership and service as core values, students are prepared to enter the field with the necessary skillset to become leaders and servants in the community.

Staying positive

Sarder Sadid: "We should all try to learn new things and stay as positive as we can throughout this unusual moment in history."

The 2019 Region 1 Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM) in Providence, RI, was an awe-inspiring experience for me, a first-timer. That weekend opened my eyes to the impact that student pharmacist influence can have in APhA. It also deepened my appreciation and passion for APhA–ASP. I understood what made the Academy great and I wanted to contribute to it. Thus, when I was asked to be my chapter delegate at the APhA2020 APhA–ASP House of Delegates, I accepted the role graciously. I was over the moon. I had heard about the amazing experience from previous delegates, and I looked forward to what some called a transformative experience.

Once 2020 rolled around, my E-board and I began working on planning our trip to National Harbor, MD. At the same time, they helped me prepare to be the best possible chapter delegate that I could be. Needless to say, all of us were very excited!

Meet your 2020–21 APhA–ASP National Executive Committee

Sydney Tu, National President

Hi, everyone! I was born and raised in Southern California but have called St. Louis, MO, my home for the last 6 years. I am currently a final-year student pharmacist at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. I have been actively involved with APhA–ASP since my third prepharmacy year, serving as my chapter’s Generation Rx Vice Chair. Since then, I have served as Chapter President-elect, as well as President the following year. Regionally, I held the role of Region 6 Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM) Coordinator for MRM2018. I have also had the tremendous honor of serving as the 2018 APhA Carl F. Emswiller Summer Intern in Association Management in Washington, DC.

I am excited to have the opportunity to serve you for another year as your National President. I am most looking forward to working with the APhA–ASP National Executive Committee (NEC) and engaging with you all across the country to continue envisioning a future for our Academy and profession. During my leisure time, I enjoy traveling, brunching, and trying new cuisines; watching shows on Hulu and Netflix; and exercising my creativity through artwork.
