Pharmacist-led program increases high-risk patients’ access to PrEP
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) enables people who are HIV negative but at high risk for contracting HIV to take medication daily to help lower the risk of acquiring the infection. In a study published in a recent issue of Open Forum Infectious Diseases, Havens and colleagues showed that a pharmacist-led PrEP program in Omaha, NE, was a feasible way to increase access to PrEP. With the relative shortage of providers who provide care to HIV populations, pharmacists can step in via collaborative practice agreements (CPAs) to bridge this care gap, especially in rural environments.
Former FDA commissioner calls for a full ban on pod-based e-cigarettes
Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb on Tuesday called on the agency to ban all pod-based e-cigarettes. "Unless we're able to change the current trajectory of tobacco-related disease, almost 6 million children alive today will die prematurely later in life from tobacco use," said Gottlieb during a speech at Harvard University.

APhA supports innovative legislation to reduce drug shortages
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) today expressed its support for a bill that will provide new opportunities to address drug shortages and improve care. The Mitigating Emergency Drug Shortages (MEDS) Act, introduced by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Tina Smith (D-MN), aims to improve communications to pharmacists about drug shortages and mitigate the risks drug shortages pose to patient safety, among other benefits.
