Adapting supplemental instruction to PharmD programs

This fall, as second-year PharmD candidates at the California Northstate University College of Pharmacy (CNUCOP), we were chosen to be student leaders for a modified supplemental instruction (SI) program called CNUCOP SI (or CSI). We provided CSI for the first-year PharmD course Cell and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and we have both personally benefitted from the experience.

SI is a student-led academic assistance program offered at many colleges and universities. Originally developed in the 1970s at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, it has expanded widely across U.S. institutions. Typically, SI is offered for high-stakes, large enrollment, science and math courses. SI is a form of pre-remediation academic assistance where SI leaders hold regularly scheduled sessions using problem sets they develop themselves. SI leaders actively engage students with the course material to promote durable learning.

Make Your Mark, Part 2

When I was the 2012–13 APhA–ASP National President, my presidential theme was Make Your Mark.
During my speech at the 2012 APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition, I described to students all over the country that we should strive to do three things in order to make our mark on the profession: discover your passion, purpose, and values; take risks; and give back. As I reflect back on those actions as the recipient of the 2018 APhA Distinguished New Practitioner Award, I believe that they hold true now more than ever.

Sometimes quitting isn’t such a bad thing

The University of Florida (UF) College of Pharmacy is proud to have made an impact on smoking cessation in three different cities in the state: Jacksonville, Orlando, and Gainesville. By tabling at health screenings, spreading the word through social media, and teaching patients the consequences of smoking, we have educated and led our communities in an aspect of patient care that some might not think a pharmacist would typically partake in.

One child at a time

School-aged children are some busy little humans. They have their plates full with learning, making friends, growing up, and … managing asthma? According to CDC, for close to 9% of children in the Unites States, asthma is an unavoidable part of daily life, one that can be difficult to live with, especially at such a young age. Properly controlling symptoms and avoiding triggers takes time to learn, and requires a teacher with an understanding of special difficulties that children of this age face.

Student pharmacists at the Midwestern University College of Pharmacy in Glendale, AZ, partner with the Phoenix Chapter of the American Lung Association (ALA) to provide asthma education to elementary school children each year. The Open Airways for Schools Program, produced by the ALA, offers a unique opportunity for these students to undergo asthma management training and to bring what they know to children that could most benefit from kid-friendly education.
