Student researchers shine in Seattle

The APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition is always a showcase of student accomplishments. From patient care to advocacy initiatives, student pharmacists have an unbelievable impact on communities and the profession. This past March, more than 200 projects were presented by student pharmacists through APhA’s Contributed Papers Program, and several were chosen for recognition due to outstanding merit during APhA2019 in Seattle.

SLI inspires and molds future chapter leaders

APhA–ASP was built on a legacy of leadership. Throughout the existence of the Academy, student pharmacists have helped contribute to making the practice of pharmacy what it is today. The Academy has helped develop and mold leaders through intentional programming, opportunities, and structure.

Let me take this opportunity to share with you one of the greatest secrets to how our Academy develops student pharmacists in becoming “Fearlessly Authentic” leaders.

Embrace the opportunity to provide effective patient counseling

One of the major aspects that drew me toward a career in pharmacy was the opportunity to educate and interact with patients. This passion motivated me to compete in the local APhA– ASP Patient Counseling Competition during my third year of pharmacy school at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) School of Pharmacy. I knew that this would be a great opportunity to help develop and improve my patient counseling skills, but I was still nervous to participate. However, our Patient Care Vice President encouraged me to challenge myself, and this led to the most memorable night of my pharmacy career: winning the APhA–ASP National Patient Counseling Competition at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Seattle this past March.

A passion to tell our chapter’s story

For our chapter’s APhA–ASP 50th Anniversary Celebration Poster at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Seattle this past March, it was important for me to showcase our college of pharmacy in a way that really connected the people and faces with all the hard work that is put in behind the scenes. Although the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, I had surprisingly little information about the history of APhA here on campus.
