Online Modules Learning Objectives

At the completion of the application-based online pre-work modules, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the role of pharmacists and opportunities for expanded roles for pharmacists.
  • Describe the purpose of PGY1 pharmacy residency training and describe similarities/ differences to doctor of pharmacy degree programs.
  • Describe the purpose and application of accreditation standards and the application of standards to the development of effective residency training programs.
  • List outcomes/competencies of community-based care residency programs.
Live Seminar Learning Objectives

After the completion of the application-based live seminar, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the foundational components and approaches to curricular design and educational theory.
  • Develop a structured framework for a community-based care residency training program that balances competency emphasis in accordance to the purpose of the program and accreditation standards.
  • Identify, name and define the required (core) and elective learning experiences to include in a community-based residency to meet the individual needs of a program, the requirements of accreditation standards and the resources available to the program (preceptors, services, practice sites).
  • Evaluate required and elective objectives and assign appropriately and efficiently to identified learning experiences.
  • Organize the structure, flow and arrangement of required and elective learning experiences.
  • Develop content for community-based residency learning experiences including the development of general description for each learning experience, specific learning activities to achieve specific learning objectives, evaluation methods and techniques, expectations for resident progression over time, interactions and evaluation methods.
  • Create a learning experience description using tools such as the PharmAcademic™ learning experience template.
  • Explain essential components for implementation and conducting the residency program (initial assessment, orientation, precepting, evaluation, resident monitoring).
  • Identify and describe strategies for initial assessment of resident knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Explain residency training requirements for the development and routine update of an individual resident development plan.
  • Create a resident individual development plan.
  • Explain and apply methods for clinical problem solving preceptor skills to enable the resident to function independently.
  • Explain types of required evaluations used in residency training and when and where each type is used.
  • Demonstrate skills in developing high quality written resident summative evaluations (with useful and concise qualitative comments) and effective formative feedback designed to facilitate resident improvement of performance, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Develop and implement a plan for ongoing residency program maintenance, monitoring, and quality improvement.

How to Obtain a Certificate of Completion
  • Successful completion of the online modules involves passing the self-study assessment with a grade of 70% or higher.
  • Successful completion of the live seminar component involves attending the full live seminar, completing the online assessment with a grade of 70% or higher, and online evaluation.
  • Credit must be claimed for each course (self-study, live seminar, and post-live training) in order to obtain credit.
  • Participants will need to have a valid APhA (pharmacist.com) username and password, as well as a CPE Monitor account to claim credit. After credit has been claimed, please visit CPE monitor for your transcript.
  • The Certificate of Completion will be available online upon successful completion of all course activities on the participant’s My Training page.
  • APhA continuing pharmacy education policy provides you with two opportunities to successfully complete a continuing pharmacy education assessment. Please note that you will not be permitted to submit an assessment a third time. The current policy of the APhA Education Department is not to release the correct answers to any of our CPE tests. This is intended to maintain the integrity of the CPE activity and the assessment.

Accreditation Information

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The APhA SCDI® for Community-based Pharmacy Residency Education and Training is approved for a total of 10.75 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit (1.075 CEUs). The ACPE Universal Activity Numbers (UAN) for this activity are listed below.

  • Self-study component is approved for 2.75 hours (0.275 CEUs) of CPE credit. ACPE UAN: 0202-0000-23-192-H99-P
  • Live seminar component is approved for 8 hours (0.8 CEU) of CPE credit. ACPE UAN: 0202-0000-23-203-L99-P
  • Target Audience: Pharmacists
  • Initial release date: March 2, 2023
  • Expiration date: March 2, 2026 - No credit can be earned after this date; Live Credit can only be granted within 60 days from the day of the seminar attended or before the expiration date, whichever is sooner.
