The experience of trauma is common and becoming even more widely recognized as we continue to cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on economic, physical, and emotional well-being. Emerging research on the impact of trauma on physical health has pushed organizations to increase trauma awareness trainings among health care staff. Despite this, many health care providers have had limited training and education surrounding traumainformed care (TIC). As a key member of the health care team, it is vital that all pharmacists take the necessary steps to become trauma informed. This review will highlight the 4 ‘R’s of a traumainformed approach to patient care: 1) Realize, 2) Recognize, 3) Respond, and 4) Resist re-traumatization.1 A traumainformed pharmacist begins the learning process by realizing the commonalityof trauma and its impact within our health care system, recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma, responding by fully integrating trauma resources into all aspects of patient care, and actively resisting re-traumatization.
