APhA Employee Benefits

APhA’s benefits philosophy is to provide a comprehensive and competitive benefits package designed to foster the health and financial wellness of our staff and their families, while promoting work/life balance. Fulltime employees are eligible to participate in all of the benefits listed below. Modified Fulltime and Part-time employees are eligible for many of the same benefits, subject to the provisions of specific eligibility requirements for each benefit.

 

Managing Your Health

This Section serves academic and industrial scientists with wide-ranging basic science research programs. The research interests of section members span chemical structure/biological activity and chemical structure/physicochemical property relationships, concepts in pharmaceutical technology and drug delivery, and the basic physical chemistry upon which these are based.

  • H.S.A./HDHP HMO: Participants select a primary care physician and stay within the network for all healthcare services. This choice allows participants to accumulate savings on a tax-favored basis for current and future medical expenses. APhA contributes a generous dollar amount on a pre-tax basis towards the employee’s account. 
  • Signature HMO:Participants select a primary care physician and stay within the network for all healthcare services. This choice offers maximum cost savings for employees.
  • Flexible Choice PPO: This plan offers three healthcare provider options within one health plan giving participants the advantages of choice, flexibility, and access to care. 
Prescription Drug Benefits

Prescription drug coverage and Mail Order Prescription discounts are available through each of the medical plans.

Dental PPO

Employees may choose between two PPO plans.  Both plans provide In-Network and Out-of-Network coverage.

Vision PPO

The plan provides In-Network and Out-of-Network coverage for vision exams, glasses and contact lenses.  In addition to this stand-alone plan, discounts on similar services are provided through APhA’s medical and dental plans.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Flexible Spending Accounts let you set aside pre-tax earnings to pay for a variety of out-of-pocket healthcare and dependent care expenses. The plan provides the ease of a debit card use to pay for qualified out-of-pocket expenses.  The health care FSA allows up to $500 of unused dollars to be carried forward and used in the next plan year.
 

 

Extra Security for You and Your Family

This Section provides unique multi-disciplinary interaction between clinical scientists and practitioners committed to expanding knowledge of the safe and effective use of drug products. A particular interest of members is how the application of pharmaceutical sciences in organized health care settings and controlled research environments relates to evaluation and development of drugs and drug delivery systems.

Life Insurance

Basic Life and Accident (AD&D) insurance is provided at no cost to participants. Life benefit is two times annual salary, up to a maximum benefit of $300,000.  Policies may be maintained beyond employment.                      

Short Term Disability Insurance

APhA offers a company-paid short term disability plan with a seven-day waiting period.  The plan provides 60% of earnings up to $2,500/week on the 8th day of disability.  Employees can continue to use existing accrued leave to wrap around the short term disability benefits to receive up to 100% of earnings. 

Long Term Disability Insurance

Long-term disability coverage is offered with a minimal employee contribution.  Benefits are provided on the 91st day of disability at 60% of earnings up to $10,000/month.

Long Term Care Insurance

Eligible employees automatically receive employer-paid basic long term care coverage for two years and up to $2,000/month.  Policy may be maintained beyond employment.

Supplemental Insurance Benefits

APhA offers a voluntary insurance benefits program including whole life insurance, 10-year level term life insurance, critical illness, and accident insurance. Policies are paid for by the employee and may be maintained beyond employment.

Business Travel Accident Insurance

In addition to APhA’s Basic Life and Accident (AD&D) insurance, all employees completing authorized travel on APhA business are insured under a group travel accident and accidental death policy with a supplemental benefit of $100,000.  Premiums are fully paid by the Association.

Worldwide Emergency Travel Assistance

The Travel Assistance program offers a wealth of travel, financial, medical and safety-related services to employees and their family members. Whether traveling for business or leisure, anytime a covered individual is over 100 miles away from home, Travel Assistance services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

United Legal Benefits

APhA offers an option to purchase legal insurance. Premiums are paid directly through the convenience of payroll deductions and services are available to APhA’s employees, their spouses and children.

Pet Insurance

APhA offers an option to purchase pet insurance which provides veterinarian worldwide services, including specialists and emergency providers.  Plans include Accidents, Illness, Hereditary Problems and Optional Wellness coverage.  Premiums are paid directly through the convenience of payroll deductions.
 

Planning for Your Future

This Section is home to those interested in health services research, outcomes, policy and administration with application to pharmaceutical treatments and pharmaceutical care. Membership is multidisciplinary, including the fields of public health, epidemiology, economics, health services research, biostatistics, medical sociology, law, health care administration and management, operations research, pharmaceutical marketing, marketing research, technology assessment and applications, and public and private reimbursement programs. Membership affords the opportunity for interaction among scientists, educators and practitioners, government managers, and other health care system representatives.

401(k) Retirement Plan

APhA’s 401(k) retirement plan allows employees to defer contributions on both a pre-tax and after-tax basis.  Participants can defer into the pre-tax 401(k) and/or into the after-tax Roth 401(k) component option of the plan as early as the date of hire. APhA’s 401(k) retirement plan also provides an employer matching contribution on an employee’s deferrals.  Participants who meet the eligibility requirements are eligible for APhA’s employer matching contribution on the first day of the quarter following their one year anniversary of employment. APhA will match 100% of an employee’s 401(k) elective deferral contribution up to 5%.  
 

Transportation

Parking

APhA provides a parking benefit contribution of $100 per month for those employees who pay for parking in APhA-approved parking facilities. Participants pay the remaining cost through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Mass Transit

The Association provides a benefit up to $100 for employees who commute to work via public transportation. Employees may pay for additional eligible mass transit costs, including metro fares and metro-provided parking fees, through pre-tax and post-tax payroll deductions.
 

Professional Development

To encourage employees to develop their job skills and knowledge, APhA provides in-house training, access to education programs offered outside of APhA and support for professional certification. Within budgetary guidelines, pre-approved educational seminars and workshops are paid for at 100% of cost.
 

Professional Membership

APhA pays the cost of an employee’s job-related professional membership to support employees’ continuing education needs and the development of a strong network of professional colleagues.
 

 

Wellness Benefits

Employee Assistance Program

Effective upon employment, all employees may use this confidential, professional counseling service for assistance with personal or work related concerns. This benefit is provided free of charge to staff and members of their immediate families living in the same household. Also included are referrals for dependent care assistance, legal and financial services.
