Today's Perspective

The profession of pharmacy is at a crossroads. The 2024 National Pharmacy Workforce Study, published in June 2025, arrives at a time marked by increasing demands, dwindling resources, and rising stress across practice settings. Yet, amid the challenges, this report brings hope. With data from more than 5,100 pharmacists nationwide, it offers a detailed snapshot of our workforce—our well-being, our workplace realities, and, most importantly, our commitment to patient care. Ninety percent of pharmacists surveyed said their work is meaningful, a testament to our enduring dedication even when conditions are difficult.
This month’s Pharmacy Today cover story shines the spotlight on pharmacy workforce and well-being solutions. The National Pharmacy Workforce Study and a recent report spearheaded by APhA and other pharmacy organizations, “Implementing Solutions Summit 2.0: Building a Sustainable, Healthy Pharmacy Workforce and Workplace,” emphasize system-level change. For far too long, the burden of well-being has rested on the shoulders of individuals to practice self-care and prioritize mental health. These reports redirect the conversation toward organizational accountability. Creating a safer, more supportive pharmacy work environment isn’t optional—it’s essential to sustaining a healthy profession. By reimagining workflows, reducing non-value-added or redundant tasks, and promoting psychological safety, these reports call for practical solutions that empower pharmacists to practice at the top of their training.
In this issue of Today, you’ll also find recommendations for treating atopic dermatitis and dry skin this winter and learn about potential dangers of using kratom to treat chronic pain, fatigue, depression, or anxiety. Stay up to date with the latest facts on asthma management and taking acetaminophen during pregnancy. Be sure to catch up on your continuing education credits with this month’s article on essential immunization updates.
As front-line pharmacists, too often we feel stretched thin or unheard. We should view these reports not as distant policy documents but as blueprints for collective renewal. They offer this message: Change is happening, your voice matters, and together we can build a healthier, more sustainable pharmacy workforce—one where every member feels supported, empowered, and proud to serve. ■
