Job. Residency. Fellowship. These words strike fear, confusion, and anxiety in the hearts of many third- and final-year student pharmacists. As you begin the transition from student pharmacist to practicing pharmacist, the question of “what’s next?” can be overwhelming at times. I experienced these same feelings while applying for fellowship positions this past fall.

Friday, May 12, 2023. It’s the night before my graduation from University of Florida College of Pharmacy. A few days prior, I had my last shift at Publix Pharmacy after working there for 3 years. And in just a few short weeks, I’d be taking the Amtrak up to Virginia to begin my new career at APhA. Surely there’s a billion things I could be doing that night, right?

So, you’ve decided you want to do residency, but are unsure of which program is right for you? Considering numerous factors in your decision-making process and identifying your key priorities will aid in assessing your options.

The APhA Foundation Executive Fellowship is the longest running postgraduate position at APhA. It is a 1-year residency with the APhA Foundation that fosters leadership and association management skills. As fellow, I oversee primary programs including student scholarships, Incentive Grants, the Pinnacle and Jacob W. Miller Awards, and other research and innovation projects as they arise. I am also liaison to the Women in Pharmacy Committee, a wonderful group that hosts events throughout the year and at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition.
