Beyond limits caring for patients with disabilities

The expectations for patients and pharmacists are a little different at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT. Most patients are not expecting to have a pharmacist visit them,” said Kevin Awugah, PharmD, a clinical pharmacist covering the medical rehabilitation unit and neurobehavioral units. Patients certainly don’t think a pharmacist will come read to them, either—but that happens on occasion when pharmacists and other hospital staff volunteer to read books to pediatric patients on weekends.

New normal or aberration? Only time will tell

It’s not that issues in pharmacy haven’t progressed—they have: APhA met with the Federal Trade Commission on vertical mergers; states continue their journeys toward provider status; advocacy against DIR fees continues; and as far as we know at the time of writing, oral arguments for the PBM case at the Supreme Court, Rutledge v Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, will be heard soon in a case that could change the way PBMs do business.

Pharmacy Today is available online and as a print magazine. As with any printed publication, much of our content is finalized when the issue goes to press, which is about 20 days before it makes it to your pharmacy. As I sit down to write this month’s Perspective, I find that this time delay presents me with a unique dilemma as an editor. I am honestly unsure of where we will find ourselves 20 days from now.

HIV places a high burden on the health care system. Persons infected with HIV are at increased risk for multiple comorbidities and require lifelong follow-up and care. In the United States, approximately 1.2 million persons are infected with HIV, and lifetime cost associated with the disease is approximately $485,000. In 2018, 37.9 million persons worldwide were living with HIV, and 1.7 million new infections and 770,000 deaths were attributed to the illness.
