Tobacco Cessation Advanced Training

This ACPE-accredited advanced continuing pharmacy education (CPE) activity is a 2-hour program that prepares pharmacists to deliver evidence-based, pharmacist-led tobacco cessation services. Across five modules, learners follow a single patient case, applying each module’s content to a realistic clinical scenario, from initial assessment through pharmacologic management, care planning, and follow-up/relapse.

Learning Objectives & Module Details
Module 1 – Foundation of Pharmacist-Led Tobacco Cessation

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the epidemiology and patterns of use of combustible tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), and their impact on public health and chronic disease
  2. Explain how pharmacists contribute to tobacco cessation efforts and population health through patient assessment, counseling, treatment support, and follow-up care
Module 2 - Documentation, Notification, and Practice Requirements Learning

Objectives:

  1. Summarize pharmacists' prescriptive authority frameworks and associated state requirements for tobacco cessation services including completion of approved training, provider notification, documentation requirements, protocol adherence, and record
  2. Describe care coordination, documentation, and billing requirements associated with pharmacist-led tobacco cessation services
Module 3 – Patient Assessment

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply the USPHS Five A’s Framework to assess tobacco nicotine use, readiness to quit, prior cessation attempts, and opportunities for intervention
  2. Evaluate patient-specific factors, including medical history, tobacco use patterns, comorbid conditions, and prior quit attempts to guide tobacco cessation treatment planning.
Module 4 – Pharmacologic Management

Learning Objectives:

  1. Compare FDA approved pharmacologic therapies for tobacco cessation, including nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, and varenicline
  2. Select appropriate pharmacologic therapy based on patient specific factors
Module 5 – Care Planning, Behavioral Counseling and Follow up

Learning Objectives:

  1. Construct an individualized tobacco cessation care plan incorporating pharmacologic and behavioral interventions
  2. Determine appropriate follow-up and monitoring strategies to support cessation and prevent relapse

How to Obtain a Certificate of Completion

How to Obtain a Certificate of Completion:

  • Complete 5 self-study modules, each of which consists of an interactive eLearning module, an assessment, and a module evaluation.
  • Achieve a passing grade of 70% or higher on each module assessment.
  • Credit must be claimed for each module in order to obtain credit.
  • Participants will need to have a valid APhA (pharmacist.com) username and password, as well as a CPE Monitor account to claim credit. After credit has been claimed, please visit CPE monitor for your transcript.
  • The Certificate of Completion will be available online upon successful completion of all 5 module activities on the participant’s My Training page.
  • APhA continuing pharmacy education policy provides you with two opportunities to successfully complete a continuing pharmacy education assessment. Please note that you will not be permitted to submit an assessment a third time. The current policy of the APhA Education Department is not to release the correct answers to any of our CPE tests. This is intended to maintain the integrity of the CPE activity and the assessment.

Accreditation Information

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. APhA's Pharmacist’s Advanced Guide to Tobacco Cessation: From Assessment to Adherence is approved for a total of 2.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit (0.2 CEUs).
