CPE
Jamie Huff, PharmD

Gluten-related disorders, including but not limited to celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), and wheat allergy, affect millions of people worldwide with an estimated global prevalence of about 5%. Clinical manifestations and symptoms can be similar despite each disorder’s distinct pathophysiology, leading to barriers to obtaining an accurate diagnosis.1 Currently, the only known and proven treatment for these disorders is a strict, lifelong gluten- and/or wheat-free diet, depending on the exact disorder. While patients and pharmacists may be aware of the need to avoid gluten in foods and beverages, they may be less aware of the presence of gluten in products such as medications, dietary supplements, cosmetics, and other personal care items.
