When it comes to choosing a career path, today’s pharmacists have more options than ever before. But just like browsing through a 20-page menu in a restaurant can leave you more confused than when you started, too many choices can be overwhelming. Especially when factoring in how those changes in salary, scheduling, responsibilities, or more will affect your personal and family life.

This month’s Pharmacy Today cover story on navigating career pathways will help you put the pieces of this puzzle together. You’ll get advice on what to consider before you make a shift, from how to start over to financial impacts or family repercussions of a change. Once you decide you want to switch paths, you’ll also find help in answering the next logical question: What do I want to do now? Learn more in the article, where you’ll read an overview of novel career pathways for pharmacists, steps for self-reflection, and other advice to help you blaze a new trail in your pharmacy career.

In this issue of Pharmacy Today, you’ll find a breakdown of fiber supplements and what they break down, the latest on when to use or avoid fenugreek, and an update on acupuncture for sciatica. You’ll also read information on new drugs, including a potential alternative to insulin for daily treatment of T2D. Catch up on other new therapeutic agents marketed in 2024 in the first installment of our annual CPE series.

In my nearly 30-year career, I have only worked for four employers. But I have been blessed with diverse experiences and the opportunity to guide some pharmacists through career changes during this time. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned about this process is to seek out satisfaction, fulfillment, and a challenge whenever you can. Find opportunities that balance professional growth and fulfillment with your personal and family life. This helps ensure you are running toward something rather than running away from something else.

Have a great Today! ■
