CPE
APhA Staff

In 2021, pharmacists continued to demonstrate the vital role they play in our nation’s health care infrastructure. While the pandemic stretched, strained, and tested the profession, pharmacists prevailed at finding new and innovative ways to provide care and be accessible to patients. In fact, pharmacists led all other health care providers in administering both COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccinations.1 Health officials and regulators at the federal and state levels granted new authorities and responsibilities to pharmacists, which were layered on top of routine patient care; meanwhile, the challenging payment system continues to threaten both the sustainability of pharmacies and the resources needed to provide care. This has also kept APhA’s advocacy team busy in ensuring that pharmacists’ and pharmacy’s issues and best interests are at the forefront. This article, which is current as of December 2021, describes a few of the top 2021 federal and state legislative and regulatory policy issues affecting pharmacy practice this year.
