APhA–ASP Member Spotlight: Samantha Freiter

Meet Samantha Freiter, a final-year PharmD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Samantha currently serves as the chapter’s immediate past president and is planning to complete an industry fellowship in clinical development following graduation. We caught up with Samantha, to learn about her and her journey in APhA–ASP.

Student Pharmacist Magazine (SPM): Can you tell us about your journey with APhA–ASP? Why did you choose to become a member and why do you remain a member?
Samantha: I joined APhA–ASP on my first day of pharmacy school because I was drawn to the idea of a network and community for all pharmacists. It doesn’t matter what area of pharmacy I want to go into because APhA represents the goals and voice of all pharmacists. As an APhA–ASP Chapter member, I appreciated the opportunities to grow as a leader and impact patient care initiatives, which led me to run for president-elect my second year and then serve as president my third year.

I also had the honor of serving as the Carl F. Emswiller Summer Intern at APhA Headquarters. In this role, I delved deeper into understanding the association and made significant contributions to the Student Development Team. I played a key role in planning the APhA–ASP Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) for chapter leaders, proposed changes to the APhA–ASP national award structure, and had the privilege of meeting with top pharmacy leaders to gain insights into their experiences in the field. These experiences further fueled my passion for advocacy and leadership within the pharmacy community.

Working within APhA–ASP and at APhA headquarters has provided me with opportunities to network, be inspired by my peers and colleagues, and continue to learn as a student pharmacist.

SPM: What is your favorite APhA–ASP member benefit?
Samantha: As a transitioning member, my favorite APhA–ASP benefit is access to Pyrls. I frequently use the drug information database during my APPE rotations, and I find it incredibly helpful for quickly looking up information. Another favorite benefit is the networking opportunities. As a member, I had the chance to attend Midyear Regional Meetings, Annual Meeting and Expositions, and SLI, where I could connect with peers from across the country.

During these meetings, I seized the opportunity to share our chapter’s ideas and goals, inspiring others while also gaining a better understanding of successful patient care initiatives at other schools. The networking experience provided me with insights into various areas of pharmacy and allowed me to establish valuable connections. Moreover, these events were instrumental in broadening my understanding of the profession. I delved deeper into advocacy, learning about proposed policies that could impact the future of pharmacy. The improved student pharmacist network also exposed me to diverse areas of pharmacy and even provided me with mentors and support throughout the industry fellowship interview process.

SPM: What is your favorite APhA–ASP memory?
Samantha: My favorite APhA–ASP memory is from attending the SLI in Washington, DC. That particular year, I had the privilege of serving as the Carl F. Emswiller Intern and contributing to the planning of SLI with the Student Development team. Simultaneously, I was fulfilling my role as my chapter’s APhA–ASP president, which allowed me to attend as both a student leader and an employee.

During SLI, I had the incredible opportunity to connect with student pharmacist leaders from across the country who shared a passion for advocacy, patient care, and the future of the profession. Engaging in educational sessions and exchanging creative ideas with student pharmacists nationwide was inspiring, but what made the experience truly memorable was the chance to forge meaningful friendships throughout the conference. I even had the privilege of leading a tour group of student pharmacists from my region around the National Mall, exploring iconic monuments together. This time spent not only enhanced my professional network but also deepened my friendships within the pharmacy community.

SPM: What is your go-to coffee order?
Samantha: Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew

SPM: If you were a superhero, what power would you have?
Samantha:
Telekinesis!

SPM: After a long day of school or work, what do you like to do in the evening to unwind?
Samantha: I’m passionate about making my home as cozy and calming as possible, so I normally try to light candles, get multiple blankets, and read on my couch to relax after a busy day. I also love being able to hang out with my friends and talk about everything while we try a new restaurant in Pittsburgh.
