Provider status is about patients

This year in APhA–ASP, each student pharmacist is challenged to “Live Your Why.” As a final-year student pharmacist, I can say with certainty that my “why,” my raison d’etre, my reason for getting out of bed in the morning, centers on two things: serving my patients and advancing my profession. I am particularly passionate about pharmacists’ pursuit of provider status because I know that in this one campaign, those two “whys” are combined.

Inside the home of pharmacy

After having the pleasure of serving for 2 years on the APhA–ASP National Executive Committee, I knew I wanted to continue working for pharmacists and student pharmacists through APhA. I decided to apply, and was ultimately selected, for the APhA Foundation Executive Residency in Association Management & Leadership. This meant that the APhA Headquarters building on the national mall would house my cubicle, and that the great pharmacy leaders working for this organization would be my colleagues.

The pharmacist’s voice is heard on Capitol Hill

This past summer, I had the unique opportunity to complete a student fellowship with Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter (R–GA), a freshman congressman and pharmacist. I experienced so many wonderful times over the summer and met some amazing people along the way. I attended meetings, briefings, and conferences with Rep. Carter, and even helped shape the talking points of his speeches for a number of events

Your efforts can lead the profession over the provider status finish line

On January 28, 2015, H.R. 592, the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act, was introduced in the House of Representatives by Reps. Brett Guthrie (R–KY), G.K. Butterfield (D–NC), and Todd Young (R–IN). Just as exciting, a day later on January 29, S. 314, legislation with the same name as H.R. 592, was introduced in the Senate by Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Robert Casey (D-PA), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH). While we had legislation that mirrored the language in H.R. 592/S. 314 last year in the House, this is the first year we have had a companion bill in the Senate.

My chronic disease helps me be a better pharmacist

I can describe myself in many ways. I love spending time with my family. I enjoy volunteering. And I am chronically ill. I have carried that heavy label for 5 years since I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis at the age of 21. I am very lucky to be alive and I am grateful that my condition has been manageable. My chronic illness has been both a burden and an inspiration. It has made practicing pharmacy very personal for me and I have used my own experience as a patient to guide my training as a student pharmacist.
