Get to know your 2026–2027 APhA–ASP National Executive Committee: Sean Kawa, national president

Sean Kawa is a third-year PharmD candidate at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and is the 2026–2027 APhA–ASP national president.

While in Los Angeles for the 2026 APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition, I stepped into the role of national president following a year of profound growth, inspiring impact, and meaningful connection. The power of collective solidarity made itself clear to me—I hope to share this influence with student pharmacists over the coming year.

Before further detailing my personal journey within APhA, I feel it best to give a glimpse into my own life. Because I serve a 2-year role, this is my second introduction, a re-introduction if you will. Let’s recap on what hasn’t changed.

I am still a proud Buffalonian, and following a year of careful observation, I can conclude it is still quite cold, but the city I love. Though we faced another heartbreaking post-season defeat, the Buffalo Bills own my heart. One new development in the hockey realm, however, is a now successful drive from our Buffalo Sabres!

In my journey to grow my knowledge and perspective, I’ve continued investing in a range of extracurricular hobbies and crafts. I’ve attempted to boost my gardening game but met a harrowing foe in the groundhog that lives beneath my shed. I am prepared to face him again. As always, my love for history has continued through books, conversations, and adventure. Speaking of which, this year was filled with exciting exploration. From my home to APhA headquarters to chapter outreach to cultures abroad, I was acquainted with incredible people, cultures, and experiences.

What has changed since the previous year? For one, my own understanding of this profession as it continues through a pivotal inflection point. Conversations with student pharmacists, new practitioners, and long-serving practitioners alike have reaffirmed my commitment to this broad and truly impactful profession while presenting new curiosities for its future.

That current air of professional curiosity inspired this year’s presidential theme: “Guided by Purpose, Lifted by Unity.” Independent of the scope and structure of our future unknown, it is the purpose unique to us all that has guided us here and will continue to direct us toward the outcomes we seek. When we unite ourselves on this journey, however, we will see that our impact will grow beyond belief. We are strengthened by solidarity when every individual is backed by a professional embrace.

This year has taught me that an association that wields the undeniable passion of student pharmacists will generate undeniable outcomes for ourselves and those we serve. I am honored to work alongside each of you during the coming year as we pursue our ideal future!

Five questions for Sean

3If you had 25 hours a day, how would you spend your extra time?

With an extra hour, I’d always prioritize the long, scenic way home. Adventure is all around us!

4. Are you summer, fall, spring, or winter?

Fall. Nothing beats the changing leaves in western New York.
