Insights from a final-year to a first-year

Gracen Callebs is a final-year PharmD candidate at the East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy.

The journey through pharmacy school is a marathon, not a sprint. As a final-year PharmD candidate, I know this all too well and have a few words of wisdom for student pharmacists in their first year.

Embrace continuous learning

Understand that perfection is not the goal—the true objective is growth. You may not always score perfectly on tests, and not every question will have an immediate answer.

Remember, even the most seasoned professionals were once beginners, learning and stumbling just like you. It’s perfectly natural to feel out of your comfort zone at times. However, with determination and a willingness to learn, you will gradually find your footing and excel.

Cultivate meaningful relationships

The journey through pharmacy school is made better by the friends you find along the way. These peers will become your support system and offer both academic collaboration and emotional encouragement. Cherish these bonds that you make because they will become invaluable. And who knows, you might even stumble upon your future significant other along the way.

Broaden your horizons

Pharmacy school is undoubtedly demanding, but it’s vital to engage in activities outside of the classroom. Whether it’s hiking, reading, or pursuing a hobby, these activities provide a necessary balance and can rejuvenate your mind amid rigorous studies. Exploring different avenues not only broadens your perspective, but also fosters a well-rounded personality that’s ready to tackle challenges from various angles.

Prioritize well-being

The demands of pharmacy school are high, but it’s essential to allocate time for self-care. Regular physical activity not only boosts your health, but also enhances mental clarity and focus. Consider it an investment in your academic success in which nurturing your well-being translates to a more fruitful and enjoyable learning experience.

Engage in student organizations

Participation in student organizations like APhA–ASP offers more than just purely social benefits. It’s an opportunity to network, gain insights from seniors, and even establish connections that could shape your future career. Leadership roles also provide a platform for you to hone skills that will serve you well in the professional world.

Master time management

Procrastination can be a formidable adversary, but learning to manage your time efficiently reduces stress and fosters a more balanced lifestyle. By strategically planning your tasks, you can carve out moments for activities that bring joy and relaxation, creating a harmonious balance between work and play. This is vital for sustaining a long and successful career in pharmacy.

Remember, embrace each step of the journey with a positive and open mindset, and you will undoubtedly achieve great things!
