Continuing my passion for photography

Continuing my passion for photography

Charles Hang is a final-year PharmD candidate at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, Gainesville.

For as long as I can remember, I had a camera in my hand, whether it was editing small home videos with my parents’ camcorder or taking graduation photos for students at the University of Florida (UF). I was nervous that I would have to part ways with my creative side when I started pharmacy school. Choosing to go to UF for pharmacy school afforded me the opportunity to continue this passion of mine while pursuing my professional goals as a future pharmacist.

In many ways, things I have learned from being a freelance photographer have translated to my time as a student pharmacist.

Capturing humanity

One of my favorite parts of being a freelance photographer is capturing what makes each person who they are. I have always said that for me to do my job as a photographer, I need to get to know the person and see what they want out of the shoot. Getting the opportunity to learn more about each client during our 90-minute photo session allows me to understand how I can best capture who they are from behind the lens.

The art of building rapport takes time, but my experience as a photographer has helped me refine this skill. I’ve noticed it translates directly into my patient interactions and when meeting new peers at the college of pharmacy.

Roll with the punches

If there is one thing about being in Florida, it is that you never know what the elements have in store. It could be the most beautiful, sunny day at 8:00 am and start torrential downpouring by 4:00 pm (and both have occurred on one day where I had shoots booked at each of those time slots). Adaptability is key as a photographer. You may have to contact your clients to provide them alternatives in availability or meet them in the middle and switch to a shorter session.

As a student pharmacist, whether on rotation or managing your busy coursework, you learn that being adaptable is key to finding solutions and ensuring the best outcomes are fully realized.

Creativity sparks innovation

My initial fear of losing that creative outlet could not be further from the truth, as most of my involvements as a student pharmacist use different forms of creativity, from graphic design for an organization’s merchandise to continuing my passion for photography and videography with my chapter positions.

One asset that my peers always recognize that I can bring to the table and an asset I personally value is my creativity. It consistently allows me to artfully organize and brainstorm ideas for projects, presentations, or clinical interventions. Creativity gives me the lens to view each situation differently, and sometimes one quick snapshot reveals that new, fresh perspective.
