APhA Student Leadership Award Q&A: Paige Holopirek

Paige Holopirek is a third-year PharmD candidate at The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. She will receive an APhA Student Leadership Award at the 2026 APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Los Angeles.

Student Pharmacist Magazine (SPM): As you reflect on your student pharmacist experience thus far, what are some of your favorite memories?

Holopirek: Some of my favorite memories from pharmacy school center around the connections I have built with fellow student pharmacists. Serving as APhA–ASP Chapter president this past year has been especially meaningful. Watching members find their place within the organization and engage in different aspects of the chapter has been incredibly fulfilling. Hearing student pharmacists share that they felt they had found a home within our chapter affirmed that our leadership team accomplished the environment we set out to create.

Additionally, serving as an APhA–ASP regional officer allowed me to connect with student pharmacists on a national level. Collaborating with individuals across the country who share a unified passion for advancing the profession broadened my perspective and created a sense of community that extended far beyond our campus.

SPM: Pharmacy school is demanding, especially when you participate in additional activities. How do you manage all of your responsibilities?

Holopirek: Balancing pharmacy school with leadership roles requires intentional organization and self-awareness. Throughout my time in pharmacy school, I have relied heavily on structured planning tools such as detailed calendars, daily breakdowns, and prioritized task lists. Some weeks require a very disciplined schedule.

Equally important has been understanding how I personally function best. I have learned that I perform better when I group commitments together rather than spreading them intermittently throughout the week. For example, I often front-load my responsibilities earlier in the week to allow for a full day of rest on the weekend. I also recognize that on exam days, I need to focus solely on academics to maintain clarity and performance. Understanding my own study habits and recovery needs has been essential in preventing burnout and maintaining balance.

SPM: What are some of your favorite leadership tools and/or resources?

Holopirek: One of the most impactful leadership development experiences I have completed is the Phi Lambda Sigma Leader Academy. This training helped me better understand my strengths and identify areas for growth. I highly recommend it to students interested in expanding their leadership skills. Being a part of the cohort makes you not only feel seen but also empowers you to grow and show others your strengths.

Beyond formal training, mentorship has been the most valuable leadership resource in my journey. Priscilla Liu, PharmD, has been a particularly influential mentor since my first year of pharmacy school. She has provided consistent guidance, encouragement, and support through both challenges and successes. I believe leadership growth is strengthened by seeking multiple mentors who inspire and challenge you. There is no limit to how many individuals can positively shape your development.

SPM: What does being a leader mean, and what does being selected for this award mean to you?

Holopirek: To me, leadership means committing to continuous personal growth and using that growth to positively influence others and the broader community. Leadership is not about holding a title; it is about creating an environment where others feel empowered to grow.

Being selected for this award is deeply meaningful because I do not view myself as a traditional leader. Instead, I strive to lead authentically by encouraging others to define leadership in their own way. I hope my leadership demonstrates that there is no single model of a “perfect” leader, rather only individuals committed to growth, service, and uplifting those around them.

SPM: What is your favorite place to visit and why?

Holopirek: I am naturally drawn to warm-weather destinations, particularly beach or resort settings. However, one of my most memorable recent trips was to San Francisco this past December. Exploring the city and visiting its landmarks was an incredible experience. I look forward to traveling more, especially internationally, once I complete pharmacy school and have greater flexibility.

SPM: What’s next for you?

Holopirek: As I enter my final year of pharmacy school, I will begin my APPE rotations. While significant transitions can bring some anxiety, I am excited for the diverse clinical experiences and professional growth that rotations will provide. I will also be relocating from Lawrence, KS, to the Kansas City area, which presents an opportunity to explore a new community.

This year will also involve preparing and applying for residency programs. While I am still exploring where the next chapter will take me, I trust that my rotations and ongoing professional development will guide me toward the right path.
