Alex Gourlay, co-COO of Walgreens, says the company is continuing to overhaul itself in order to become a comprehensive health care destination. During the HLTH VRTL 2020 event, Gourlay said digital integrations are becoming more important as he and his team became aware that more people want to obtain care through alternative means. Walgreens' Find Care digital platform was in place before the pandemic, and gives patients access to telehealth features through partnerships with companies such as MDLive and Amwell, while also connecting users with solutions for diabetes, asthma, and sleep problems. The Find Care platform now offers COVID-19 testing resources. Gourlay noted that Walgreens is partnering with VillageMD, which has five physical clinic locations, with plans to raise that number to 40 by the end of the fiscal year and at least 500 in the next 5 years. Gourlay added, "Having the doctor and the pharmacist not just together physically but, more importantly, together digitally—sharing information, being able to access health care at home through the digital app, through telemedicine, or pharmacy chat—as well as physically in your local corner drugstore, we think is incredibly important."
