Study: Most high school heroin users started with prescription opioids

According to a study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence, more than 75% of high school heroin users took prescription opioids before trying the more addictive illicit drug. New York University researchers analyzed data on 67,822 students and looked for associations between frequency and recency of nonmedical use of opioids and heroin as well as use among social and demographic groups. The study found that 12.4% of students reported using medical opioids for nonmedical reasons, and 1.2% said they had used heroin. Of those who reported heroin use, 77.3% said they had taken prescription opioids at some point.
