In response to changes in the American diet and updates in nutrition science, FDA has mandated new label requirements for foods and dietary supplements. The label changes range from measuring folic acid in micrograms of dietary folate equivalents to including added sugar and its percentage of daily value. The changes were presented at an educational event in Washington on July 18, sponsored by the bipartisan Dietary Supplement Caucus with help from trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry. Attendees viewed examples of efforts to educate consumers on the label changes, including Label Wise, an initiative aimed at spreading awareness of the upcoming changes to the supplement facts label.
