Webinar: Nuclear Pharmacy for the Acute Care Pharmacist
This program is to provide the acute care pharmacist with a foundational understanding of nuclear pharmacy practice to better address The Joint Commission regulatory expectations that the inpatient pharmacist provide oversight of radiopharmaceuticals used in the nuclear medicine department. The inpatient practitioner will gain insight into the manner in which nuclear pharmacies process orders and prepare radiopharmaceuticals to meet the quality standards for safety and efficacy. This improved understanding will assist pharmacists in implementing the necessary processes to ensure safe and effective monitoring of these radiopharmaceuticals in the acute care setting.
Pre-registration is required to participate. Registrants for this live activity MUST be current APhA members.
After registering, members will be sent a confirmation email with instructions to access the webinar. A reminder notice will also be sent on day of webinar to all registrants.
Participants must actively participate in the entire activity and successfully complete the online assessment and evaluation to claim CPE credit.
At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
- Describe the regulations & restrictions for acquisition and use of radiopharmaceuticals in the nuclear medicine department.
- Identify the characteristics of radiopharmaceuticals.
- List the general 4 categories/forms of radiopharmaceuticals available for purchase.
- Describe the unique characteristics of radiopharmaceuticals that govern the timing in which these medicine products must be prepared, delivered to the nuclear medicine department, and administered to patients.
- Describe the foundational principles of nuclear pharmacy compounding, including programs and processes nuclear pharmacies have implemented to ensure and monitor product quality, safety, and sterility (e.g. USP 797 compliance).
- Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for the review of nuclear pharmacy orders (i.e., Joint Commission) as well as recognize the resources available to assist with compliance.
- Apply this learning in the development of internal processes for effective and efficient monitoring of radiopharmaceuticals.
