American Pharmacists Month: Celebrate and spread the word

APhA recognizes pharmacists for their hard work, dedication

It’s hard to believe, but American Pharmacists Month (APhM) is in full swing. APhA staff have been hard at work creating activities and celebrations to make sure that pharmacists are recognized for their hard work and dedication.

One of the main goals and areas of interest for APhM is consumer outreach through the media. APhA has been conducting outreach to national media on both provider status and the pharmacist’s role on the health care team, but we also encourage you to use our resources at www.pharmacist.com/american-pharmacists-month and talk with your local press and community. Focusing on your immediate community is a key facet of not only the “Know Your Pharmacist—Know Your Medicine” campaign but also the Pharmacists Provide Care campaign.

To reach out to our local community, APhA hosted a health fair on Capitol Hill on September 17. This event brought pharmacist-provided patient care services directly to some of our nation’s key policy makers. Participating pharmacists and student pharmacists advocated for the profession, providing health screenings and important health information to those policy makers who can help pharmacists obtain recognition and compensation for their services. (See page 58 for more information.)

And, as if one health fair wasn’t enough, our dedicated pharmacy community is so involved and interested in advocating for the profession that we have expanded the health fair to a second location! In October, APhA will be hosting another health fair on the Hill for the 900-member staff of the Architect of the Capitol.

If you haven’t finished your celebration planning yet, don’t worry. Plenty of resources and activity ideas are available on our website. During your celebrations, don’t forget that National Pharmacy Technician Day is October 28, 2014. Bring your pharmacy staff together and celebrate the invaluable contributions of these important team members. As always, make sure to send all your celebration photos and videos to aphm@aphanet.org or APhA’s Facebook page.
