Advocating for provider status: Here’s how

Today's Perspective

Last month we talked in this space about the 1–2–3 approach you can use to take action on provider status. This month, we begin to get into the details on how you can advocate for H.R. 4190 and to provide you with tools for doing just that.

APhA members of all types and levels of involvement are on the forefront of this effort, pressing their Members of Congress on the provider status bill. In the advocacy 101 article on pages 50 and 51 of this issue, Editorial Director Diana Yap shares their stories in an effort to show how we all can press for success by building relationships with our senators and representatives through a unified message across the profession, messages and phone calls, and visits with Members of Congress while they are back home during the August recess and the fall election season.

When making personal contacts with Members of Congress, it’s important to leave something behind that summarizes your main points. As shown on pages 52 and 53, APhA has created state-specific infographics that detail how many counties have medically underserved areas and how many pharmacists are available to provide care; we also have created a national map to help Members of Congress realize the problem is a broad one and not just in their state.

These and many other resources are available on PharmacistsProvideCare.com, which takes you to the campaign page on pharmacist.com. There you can join the campaign, download your state’s infographic, read about your colleagues and how they are making the case for provider status, keep up with the latest activity on the bill, and reflect on profiles of pharmacists’ innovative patient care services that can be expanded when provider status becomes a reality.

This effort is going to take heavy lifting and support from many. If you are an APhA member, thank you for providing the fuel to get us started. We have a long road to travel, and we are making progress. If you are not a member, please join APhA now! Support the future of our profession and APhA’s efforts to achieve success on this important initiative by accessing the Get Involved section of pharmacist.com. Together, we are a more potent political force than we can be individually or in smaller numbers. Let’s work together on this!

Get ready to push, and enjoy your August Today
