APhA Media Advisors Network
In 2003, The American Pharmacists
Association (APhA) created two networks of specialized pharmacists
capable of speaking about OTC products (“OTC” refers to
over-the-counter products) and Rx products (“Rx” refers to
prescription medications). In response the network’s growing
popularity and the increasing cross-over expertise of many of the
pharmacists, the APhA Media Advisors Network was formed in 2006.
Medications are powerful - that’s why they work. Pharmacists are
the medication experts on America’s healthcare
team. The pharmacist is uniquely qualified to help consumers take charge
of their healthcare by making wise choices regarding medications. As a
media resource, the APhA Media Advisors can help reporters make sense of
the ever-increasing array of medication options available, their risks
and benefits, and their widening impact.
The purpose of the APhA Media Advisors Network is to serve as a resource
for journalists who are working on stories that involve improving
medication use and advancing patient care by pharmacists. The network
consists of academics, pharmacy policy experts, and pharmacists in a
variety of professional practice settings including community, chain and
hospital. Each media advisor is an APhA member, all have extensive
knowledge of both over-the-counter products and prescription
medications, as well as experience working with the media. Today, the
APhA Media Advisors Network has more than 50 pharmacists around the
country, including most major media markets. To date, the network
has responded to inquires and interviewed with hundreds of news outlets
around the world.
