Employee Benefits Program
APhA’s benefits philosophy is to provide a comprehensive and
competitive benefits package designed to foster the health and financial
wellness of our staff and their families, while promoting work/life
balance. Fulltime employees are eligible to participate in all of the
benefits listed below. Modified Fulltime and Parttime employees are
eligible for many of the same benefits, subject to the provisions of
specific eligibility requirements for each benefit.
Managing Your Health
Medical
APhA currently offers a choice of three different medical plans,
available to staff on the first day of the month following 2 months of
continuous employment. Coverage for individual employees is fully paid
by the Association.
-HMO: Participants select a primary care physician and stay
within the network for all healthcare services. This choice offers
maximum cost savings for employees.
-Select Choice: This point-of-service plan simultaneously covers
participants under both a major medical plan and an HMO. The plan design
provides participants with the double benefit of HMO cost savings as
well as the freedom to choose any healthcare provider each time care is
needed.
-Flexible Choice: This plan offers three healthcare provider
options within one health plan giving participants the advantages of
choice, flexibility, and access to care. Participants may move
freely among these providers whenever they choose, including Kaiser
Permanente Providers, Participating Providers, and Out-of-Network
Providers.
Prescription Drug Benefits
Prescription drug coverage is available through each of the
health plans.
Vision
Discounts on vision exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses are provided
through each of the health plans.
Dental
Employees may choose between a Standard and
Premium plans, both of which provide two cleanings per year,
fully covered.
Extra Security for You and Your Family
Life Insurance
Basic Life and Accident (AD&D) insurance is provided at no cost
to participants.
Life benefit is three times annual salary, up to a maximum benefit of
$300,000.
Disability Insurance
Both short-term and long-term disability coverage are offered with a
minimal employee contribution.
Business Travel Accident Insurance
All employees completing authorized travel on APhA business are
insured under a group travel accident and accidental death policy, with
a basic maximum benefit of $300,000 and a supplemental benefit of
$100,000. Fully paid by the Association.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Flexible Spending Accounts let you set aside pre-tax earnings to pay
for a variety of out-of-pocket healthcare and dependent care
expenses.
Supplemental Insurance Benefits
APhA offers a voluntary insurance benefits program including whole
life insurance, 10-year level term life insurance, critical illness, and
accident insurance. Policies are paid for by the employee and may be
maintained beyond employment.
Planning for Your Future
401(k) Retirement Plan
The APhA retirement plan allows you to put pre-tax wages into a
retirement savings account, and APhA will match a portion of your
contributions. Employees are eligible to enroll in this benefit at the
first quarterly open enrollment session following their one-year
anniversary of employment. APhA matches participant contributions
dollar-for-dollar up to 3% of pay. Contributions of 4% of pay are
matched by APhA at 3.5%, and contributions of 5% or more are matched at
4%.
Credit Union Membership
Employees may join the US Premier Federal Credit
Union, offering savings, checking, and loan services with highly
competitive interest rates and benefits.
Transportation
Parking
APhA provides a parking benefit contribution of $100 per month for
those employees who pay for parking in APhA-approved parking facilities.
Participants pay the remaining cost through pre-tax payroll
deductions.
Mass Transit
The Association provides a benefit in the amount of $100 for
employees who commute to work via public transportation. Employees may
pay for additional eligible mass transit costs, including metro fares
and metro-provided parking fees, through pre-tax payroll deductions.
Alternative Commuting
APhA offers a cash allowance of $100 per month to employees who
commute by alternative means such as bicycle or by foot, and who forego
participation in the APhA parking or mass transit programs. The
alternative commuting allowance is treated as additional compensation,
and employees electing this benefit will incur payroll and income taxes
on the benefit amount.
Professional Development
Tuition Reimbursement
Fulltime employees who have completed at least one year of employment
may apply for APhA’s Educational Assistance benefit. This program
provides reimbursement of 50% of eligible expenses up to stated annual
maximums for approved undergraduate and graduate level degree courses at
accredited institutions.
Continuing Education
To encourage employees to develop their job skills and knowledge,
APhA provides in-house training, access to educational programs offered
outside of APhA and support for professional certification. Pre-approved
educational seminars and workshops are paid for at 100% of cost.
Professional Membership
APhA pays the cost of an employee’s job-related professional
membership to support employees’ continuing education needs and
the development of a strong network of professional colleagues.
Wellness Benefits
Employee Assistance Program
Effective upon employment, all employees may use this confidential,
professional counseling service for assistance with personal or work
related concerns. This benefit is provided free of charge to staff and
members of their immediate families living in the same household. Also
included are referrals for dependent care assistance, legal and
financial services.
Health Club Membership
Special membership rates are available for APhA staff at the Capital
City Club and Spa, located on K Street in the Hilton Hotel.
Work-Life Benefits
APhA provides generous paid leave benefits, paid holidays, and
opportunities for many staff to participate in flexible work
arrangements.
