The APhA Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) is designed to help
APhA-ASP Chapter officers develop their leadership skills as they
prepare to guide their Chapters toward continued success. During a
series of interactive and educational sessions, attendees will be
challenged to identify their leadership style, discuss teamwork
strategies, develop communication skills, and receive updates on
APhA-ASP activities. Attendance at SLI counts towards the APhA
Leadership Tranining Series. On behalf of APhA and Procter &
Gamble, we look forward to sharing the APhA Summer Leadership Institute
experience with all of the 2012 attendees.
REGISTRATION
Who Can Attend? All APhA-ASP Chapters and satellite
campuses are invited to send one chapter officer to attend
the 2012 APhA Summer Leadership Institute. Schools that
received their charter at APhA2012 APhA-ASP House of Delegates are
allowed to bring additional attendees. All APhA-ASP Regional
Officers, APhA-ASP Standing Committee Members and APhA-ASP/IPSF National
Officers are extended a separate invitation to the APhA Summer
Leadership Institute and do not count as your Chapter’s
representative.
What Officer Should Our Chapter Send? Traditionally the officer representative has been the
president-elect or incoming president. Chapters are encouraged to
send someone who has not previously attended.
How Much
Does SLI Cost? APhA offers free registration to all attendees.
All meals, except Saturday dinner, are provided. Attendees are
responsible for their transportation and the cost of hotel
accommodations secured for the meeting. Most APhA-ASP chapters provide
funding for each attendee to participate.
Available: April 13 Deadline: May 11 at midnight (PST).
Registration is only available via the online form.
WAITLIST
Seating space is limited. However, APhA will
accept additional registration requests on a first-come,
first-serve basis. To place additional chapter officer representatives
on the APhA SLI Waitlist, register your representative
online. E-mails to APhA-ASP requesting to be placed on the Waitlist will
not be accepted. Registration on the SLI Waitlist does not
guarantee a spot at SLI. Do not book flights and/or transportation until
you have received an e-mail from APhA Staff indicating a spot is
available for you to attend and you have responded to the e-mail.
After the APhA SLI Waitlist registration period closes an e-mail
will be sent the weeks of May 20-28 informing those on the
SLI Waitlist if a spot is available. If a
spot does become available the student pharmacist will need to
confirm their attendance or they will forfeit their tentative spot.
Available: April 13 Deadline: May 11
CHAPTER ADVISORS
All Chapter Advisors are invited to attend APhA Summer
Leadership Institute. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about
APhA-ASP and what occurs throughout the year and the role that advisors
have within the chapter and meet with the APhA staff. In addition to
attending the student programming there is an Advisors
Roundtable. Advisors use the same registration form and follow the
same hotel policies as all other registrants.
CAPITOL HILL VISITS
SLI is an ideal opportunity to advocate for pharmacy through meeting
with your Members of
Congress and/or their staff on the Hill. As a constituent
and a student pharmacist, meeting in-person with your Congressional
representative(s) and/or their staff is the most effective way to
promote pharmacy specific legislative issues and develop relationships
with your lawmaker(s). Members of Congress and their staff know
that an issue is important when their constituents and voters take the
time to travel all the way to Washington to meet with them in
person. These same offices also tend to put more stock into
messages and opinions from those with whom they have
relationships. Hill Visits you will take that initial step towards
developing those relationships.
To prepare you for your Hill Visits, APhA will provide tips, talking
points, and leave behind materials. APhA staff will also provide
two Hill Visit Briefing sessions:
• Conference Call: TBA
• On-site: TBA
We strongly encourage you to attend both sessions, but we ask that
participants attend at least one. To help you prepare, we have
developed the following materials:
• Checklist
for Conducting Hill Visits at APhA’s SLI
• A Hill Visit
meeting request template letter for SLI participants
Lastly, once you have scheduled your visits, please RSVP
your appointment information for EACH participant who will be conducting
the Hill Visit. This information will also go towards
members APEX
qualifications. The APhA APEX Club is a select group of leaders
in pharmacy who have demonstrated their commitment to and support of the
profession in highly important and tangible ways. Performing a Hill
Visit is a golden opportunity to complete one important piece of the
Advocacy membership criteria.
Contact Jason Hansen with APhA’s Government Affairs Department
for any Hill Visit related questions. Jason can be reached at jhansen@aphanet.org or by phone at
