EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Honor Codes
Description of activity
Honor codes state the school’s policies regarding academic
integrity and professional behavior. Zimmerman and Kier, surveyed the
nation’s pharmacy schools and found that 76% of the pharmacy
schools who responded to their survey enforce honor codes. Schools who
report stricter penalties, such as mandatory dismissal also appear to
have fewer infractions than other institutions.
Rationale
The high degree of respect given to pharmacists is based on the
public’s trust and confidence in our integrity. Students are
considered members of the profession when they enter pharmacy school and
are expected to demonstrate high standards of ethical conduct. Ignoring
infractions of the honor code could affect the student body in several
ways. If students feel the honor code is not taken seriously, the number
of infractions could increase. Also, students who demonstrate ethical
conduct may experience a decline in morale if unprofessional behavior is
not addressed.
