EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Etiquette Dinner
Description of activity
A professional etiquette dinner offers instruction in basic table
manners and appropriate dining in a business setting. The dinner should
represent what might be served at a typical meal for business purposes,
including a salad or appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Planners
should require participants to wear professional business attire and
should make the experience as close to a real restaurant as possible.
Planners should arrange to have waiters, hosts, or hostesses. Also,
coordinators should provide instruction on proper utensil selection and
table manners before each course. A checklist of proper dining behavior
as well as worst-case scenario examples consisting of things that could
happen could also be provided. Finally, the coordinator should allow for
ample time for questions from the student guests.
Rationale
Table manners are an integral part of non-verbal communication.
Formality in dress, grammar, and manner fosters better respect for the
individual.
Areas of professionalism addressed
This activity helps students demonstrate self-confidence, courteous
behavior, appropriate boundaries in work or learning situations, and
ability to communicate and interact effectively with patients, family,
colleagues, and other health professionals.
