EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION
Mentor Programs
Student: Student
Faculty/ Preceptor: Student
Faculty / Preceptor: Faculty / Preceptor
Description of activity
Coursework or other activities specifically designed to promote exchange
between students, faculty, and preceptors. Examples include:
- Shadowing experiences: singular vs. longitudinal
- Electronic communication either via email or discussion board
- Formal events during professional meetings
Rationale
Mentor programs promote professional interaction and collegiality. The
primary goal of mentor programs is to emphasize the benefits of
professional involvement, networking, career counseling, etc. Mentoring
provides a forum for open discussion between individuals on topics that
may not be appropriate for open forum or listserv opinion. Evidence
suggests these programs have the potential to reduce inconsistent
socialization.
Areas of professionalism addressed
- Membership in professional organizations
- Pride in the profession
- Life-long learning
- Selflessness
Special issues involving planning / promotion /
implementation
Professional organization affiliated programs may require membership for
participation. The development of programs within academic institutions
requires tremendous planning and resources. Committees and/or task
forces are recommended to ensure assistance with program and activity
development and implementation.
