Careers in Pharmacy

Pharmacy Specialties

To recognize specialty areas of pharmacy practice, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) created a Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) in 1976. The goal of this board is to protect public health by verifying the level of training, knowledge, and skills of pharmacist in recognized areas of specialty practice.

BPS offers certification in the following specialties:

  • Nuclear Pharmacy, Specialists seek to improve and promote the public's health through the safe and effective use of radioactive drugs for diagnosis and therapy.
  • Nutrition Support Pharmacy, Specialists promote the maintenance and/or restoration of optimal nutritional status, designing and modifying treatment according to the needs of the patient.
  • Oncology Pharmacy, Specialists recommend, design, implement, monitor and modify pharmacotherapeutic plans to optimize outcomes in patients with malignant diseases.
  • Pharmacotherapy, Specialists are responsible for ensuring the safe, appropriate, and economical use of drugs in patient care and frequently serve as a primary source of drug information for other health care organizations.
  • Psychiatric Pharmacy, Specialists address the pharmaceutical care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
  • Ambulatory Care, Coming soon

Pharmacists must meet a set of requirements, which includes passing an exam, to be certified in one of these specialties.
