Pharmacy Specialties
To recognize specialty areas of pharmacy practice, the
American Pharmacists Association (APhA) created a Board of Pharmacy
Specialties (BPS) in 1976. The goal of this board is to protect public
health by verifying the level of training, knowledge, and skills of
pharmacist in recognized areas of specialty practice.
BPS offers certification in the following specialties:
- Nuclear Pharmacy, Specialists seek to improve and
promote the public's health through the safe and effective use of
radioactive drugs for diagnosis and therapy.
- Nutrition Support Pharmacy, Specialists promote the
maintenance and/or restoration of optimal nutritional status, designing
and modifying treatment according to the needs of the
patient.
- Oncology Pharmacy, Specialists recommend, design,
implement, monitor and modify pharmacotherapeutic plans to optimize
outcomes in patients with malignant
diseases.
- Pharmacotherapy, Specialists are responsible for
ensuring the safe, appropriate, and economical use of drugs in patient
care and frequently serve as a primary source of drug information for
other health care organizations.
- Psychiatric Pharmacy, Specialists address the
pharmaceutical care of patients with psychiatric
disorders.
- Ambulatory Care, Coming soon
Pharmacists must meet a set of requirements, which includes passing
an exam, to be certified in one of these specialties.
