APhA-ASP Mortar and Pestle Professionalism Award

NOMINATION & SELECTION PROCESS:
Updated for Spring 2009 - Due to lack of sponsorship, we regretfully announce that the APhA-ASP Mortar & Pestle Professionalism Award and Essay Contest has been indefinitely suspended. APhA will continue to seek sponsorship opportunities for the program and will keep you updated as information becomes available. We encourage Chapters to continue the tradition of recognizing a graduating senior who has exhibited exemplary professionalism throughout their academic career

HISTORY:

The McNeil Consumer Healthcare Mortar and Pestle Dean's Award was established in the early 1980's to promote outstanding performance in pharmacy administration by a student pharmacist in their junior or senior year. In 1995 representatives of McNeil Consumer Healthcare and APhA agreed to transfer the administration of this program to APhA-ASP. The program name was changed to the APhA-ASP Mortar and Pestle Professionalism Award sponsored by McNeil Consumer Healthcare.

The award criterion was also modified by APhA and McNeil Consumer Healthcare. The award was presented annually to one graduating student at every school and college of pharmacy who exhibits characteristics inherent in a professional. The criteria of the APhA-ASP Mortar and Pestle Professionalism Award recognizes professionalism and encourages future professional development in each recipient. This built upon the work of the APhA-ASP / American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Council of Deans (AACP-COD) Task Force, and is consistent with emerging initiatives and programming provided to students through APhA-ASP.

An additional offering was also added to the APhA-ASP Mortar and Pestle Professionalism Award.  After receiving the award at their school or college of pharmacy, graduates are then eligible to compete in an essay contest judged by leading pharmacy professionals, program sponsors, APhA Staff, and members of the APhA-ASP National Executive Committee.  The winner of this essay contest receives a $2,000 scholarship to be applied toward continuing education in pharmacy. In 2009 the APhA-ASP Mortar & Pestle Professionalism Award and Essay Contest was indefinitely suspended.
