Dean Hewitt W. “Ted” Matthews - Mercer University
Hewitt W. “Ted” Matthews, RPh, PhD, was selected for his involvement with student pharmacist activities since the start of his career. As dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Mercer University, he supports all student projects and the professional growth of students through actively encouraging involvement. Dean Matthews attempts to meet all students through annual activities such as participating in the dean’s dinner at the APhA Annual Meeting, teaching a lecture in several courses, and distributing ice cream treats to students during the spring semester. From the beginning of his career as dean, he has worked with faculty members to update the curriculum that allows students to gain new knowledge and skills to aid them as practitioners. Through his dedication and promotion of student welfare, service, and leadership, Mercer’s student pharmacists have been recognized nationally for service, leadership, and professionalism.

Matthews is dean and professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as well as the University’s vice president for the health sciences. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Clark College, a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Mercer University, and a master of science in pharmaceutical biochemistry and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin.

Matthews is a member of numerous professional organizations, including AMCP, AACP, AAPS, APhA, and ASHP. He has been honored with several awards for his achievements, including an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Magnolia State Pharmaceutical Association, Dean Facilitator within the Academic Leadership Fellows Program from AACP, Chauncey I. Cooper Award from the National Pharmaceutical Association, and American College of Apothecaries Dean’s Recognition Award for Outstanding Service to Community Pharmacy Practice.
