Gary E. DeLander - Oregon State
University
Gary E. DeLander, PhD, was selected for embodying all facets of
an ideal advisor. He personally encourages students to focus on
developing leadership and professional skills and provides guidance for
student travel fundraising. With his opendoor policy, he reaches out to
students in leadership roles and within the chapter membership to
provide encouragement in all aspects of project development and
individual aspirations for involvement regionally and nationally. He is
an excellent role model to students with his involvement at the state
and national level through the Pharmacy Coalition. What makes DeLander
unique is his advocacy for his vision. He believes every pharmacy
student should participate in one community outreach event and develop
through chapter membership into a leader for the profession.
DeLander currently serves as executive associate dean and chair of
the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Oregon State University
College of Pharmacy. He completed his professional pharmacy education at
the University of Colorado in 1977 and received his doctorate in
pharmacology at the University of Minnesota in 1983. His scholarly
interests have focused on mechanisms of pain and analgesia, drug actions
of opioids, and more ecently, models of pharmacy education.
DeLander has served pharmacy practice and pharmacy education in a
variety of roles. He has served as an advisor or liaison for several
student professional organizations and as the Oregon State University
APhA–ASP advisor since 1989. He has previously served as national
president of the Rho Chi Society and chair of the AACP biological
sciences section. He currently is a member of the editorial board of the
American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education and serves on boards of
directors for the Oregon State Pharmacist Association and Benton
Hospice. Oregon pharmacists recognized him in 2007 with the Bowl of
Hygeia Award for community service.
