Pharmacists provide ready access to COVID-19 vaccines within their communities

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is committed to working with pharmacy teams, medical providers, public health professionals, and other stakeholders following the decision of CDC to expand its recommendations that children aged 6 months and above be vaccinated against COVID-19. As valued members of the immunization neighborhood, pharmacists are ready, willing, and able to address the vaccination needs of children, teens, and adults within their communities. APhA also encourages parents to visit their medical practice for well-child visits and ensure that they and their children are up to date on their recommended vaccinations.

On June 18, 2022, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that children under 5 years complete a COVID-19 vaccination series. The options authorized for this age cohort include:

  • A 3-dose primary series of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (3 microgram each dose) for infants and children 6 months through 4 years.
  • A 2-dose primary series of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (25 microgram each dose) for infants and children 6 months through 5 years.

These recommendations were accepted by the CDC director and follow expansion of the emergency use authorizations issued by FDA.

From the beginning of the pandemic, pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians have been heroic in their work, serving the needs of their communities and their patients despite unprecedented challenges. Since December 2020, community pharmacists and their teammates have administered more than 255 million COVID-19 vaccinations (45% of the national total), with even more COVID-19 vaccinations administered by pharmacists in other practice settings.

In an APhA pulse survey conducted in March 2022, the majority of responding pharmacists (66%) replied that they would be prepared to administer COVID-19 vaccines to children under 5 years old if authorized to do so. Some pharmacies may not provide vaccines to all children due to practice-specific factors. We encourage the public to talk with their pharmacist about options for age-appropriate vaccination in your local community. As always, pharmacists stand ready to work with other immunization stakeholders to meet individual and community public health needs.
