Demonstration Stations
1) Cholesterol / Diabetes Screening: At
this station, individuals will have a sample of blood taken (via finger
stick and capillary tube draw). The sample will be placed in a
Cholestech cassette. Depending upon their fasting status, a panel
of tests will be done ranging from total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, as well
as glucose levels. Volunteers working in this area will be doing
sample collection or operating and recording the Cholestech
results. The results are available in 5 minutes and are picked-up
at the Counseling Area. The Cholesterol/Diabetes and Counseling
Area are interlinked.
2) Counseling Area: In the patient
counseling area patients will receive their cholesterol and diabetes
screening results from a pharmacist who will explain what they mean. In
addition to the cholesterol/glucose results, pharmacists will consider
the patient's blood pressure and potentially other results as well in
their discussions with patients. This is your opportunity to let
them know how pharmacists can assist them and their
constituencies. The steps involved in working the counseling area
are:
- Ask the participant for their report card form (and name )
- Pull (or have Alliance staff pull) screening result.
- Transfer results to the report card (if the person is a
legislator there should be a circled L on the form). Do not give
the patient their result form – only the report card
- Find a free table – provide counseling – put an X on the
upper right hand corner of the result form to indicate that the patient
has been counseled.
- After completing the counseling session, give the patient a sticker
indicating they have spoken to a pharmacist and return the result form
to the completed box.
- Then counsel the next person
Note: Copies on the new cholesterol guidelines will be
available on site (they had previously been sent to you)
3) Body Fat Analysis Area: In this area,
participants will receive an ultrasonic measurement of their biceps
using the Futuro machine. The machine provides a printout of the
persons body mass, fluid content, etc. These results will be
transferred to a one page (2 sided) form and a pharmacist will review
the results with the patient. Volunteers working this area will
either take the measurements or counsel the patients. On-site
training of the equipment and report information will be
provided. Sample

4) Respiratory Area: In this area,
pharmacists will be using the Satellite
Spirometry System. The computerized spirometer measures
complete flow-volume and time-volume date, along with comparative
values. Patients will be sitting on the high stool provided in the
booth and exhaling as hard as they can to get a printout of lung
capacity. The pharmacist will review the results with the
patient. In addition, peak flow meters will be available to
patients identified by the pharmacist as needing the measurement
tool. If available, we will have a carbon-monoxide meter for
measuring the impact of cigarette smoking on an individual's lungs.
5) Blood Pressure Area: Pharmacists will
measure patient's blood pressures and record the results on the report
card that the participant received at the booth sign-in table.
Blood pressure cuffs and stethescopes are available. Booth
volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own equipment.
6) Bone-Density / Osteoporosis Measurement
Area: Using the Sahara Heel Bone Ultrasonic Machine,
patients will be screened for bone density. Patients must have
stocking free heels to do the screening. Download further
information related to the screening. Pharmacists will review the
results and consult with patients regarding ways to prevent bone loss,
etc. Patient result
