Addiction Practitioner Interest Group (PInG)
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the APhA Addiction Practitioner Interest Group is
to foster greater awareness and understanding of addictive disease as a
public health issue and promote treatment and recovery from addictive
illnesses through education, advocacy and peer support.
APhA ADDICTION PRACTITIONER INTEREST GROUP INFORMATION
As part of the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmacy
Practice and Management (APhA-APPM), in January 2000 the Addiction
Practitioner Interest Group (PInG) was formed. It was developed to
provide a membership “home” to those pharmacists interested
in the treatment of patients and/or colleagues who suffer from the
disease of chemical dependency. The mission of the interest group is to
provide mechanisms for pharmacists to share information and ideas and
update their skills and knowledge about addiction-related programs and
treatments.
ADDICTION PInG GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Goal 1: Further the implementation of the 2002 APhA Policy on PRN
funding.
Objective 1: Complete the PRN Funding "Tool Kit” and package it,
in a form which can be distributed by APhA.
Goal 2: Help to implement the 2003 APhA Policy on Addiction
Education.
Objective 1: Develop and package an education program on addiction
and recovery for use by APhA-ASP, State Associations, and PRN.
Objective 2: Continue to provide educational offerings under the
PInG’s auspices for the APhA Annual Meeting.
Goal 3: Enhance the Addiction PInG’s visibility within
APhA-APPM and APhA for the membership and other interested
parties.
Objective 1: Conduct a needs assessment of Addiction PInG members to
determine products/resources of interest to the group.
Objective 2: Develop an Addiction PInG area on the APhA Web site that
provides valuable resources to APhA members.
Goal 4: Establish a mechanism for administering the
Ron Williams Scholarship Fund through the APhA Addiction PInG to enable
student pharmacists to attend the University of Utah School on
Alcoholism and other Drug Dependencies.
Objective 1: Establish the mechanism for soliciting and collecting
contributions for the fund, develop criteria for evaluating applicants,
establishing the process for soliciting and evaluation applications and
for awarding the scholarship.
Objective 2: Develop a process for administering the scholarship,
including criteria for evaluating applicants, a process for soliciting
and evaluation applications and for selecting awardees.
Goal 5: To establish an infrastructure for communicating
effectively and regularly with the Addiction PInG membership.
Objective 1: Establish a process/timeline for consistent
communications to Addiction PInG members. .
Objective 2: Assess the interest and feasibility of establishing an
Addiction PInG e-newsletter.
