Merck obtains rights to market seasonal influenza vaccine Afluria

Agreement with CSL Biotherapies will allow company to market and distribute vaccine for 2010/2011 through 2015/2016 influenza seasons.

Merck & Co., Inc., announced on September 28 that an exclusive agreement with CSL Biotherapies will allow Merck to market and distribute the seasonal influenza vaccine Afluria, beginning with the 2010/2011 influenza season and continuing through the 2015/2016 season.

The terms of the agreement stipulate that Merck will have control of commercialization of Afluria in the United States and that CSL will supply Afluria to Merck and retain marketing rights for the vaccine outside of the United States.

Approved by FDA in September 2007, Afluria is indicated for the active immunization of patients 18 years of age or older against influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B present in the vaccine.
