Daniel E. Buffington Receives APhA’s Daniel B.
Smith Practice Excellence Award
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American
Pharmacists Association (APhA) announced that Daniel E. Buffington of
Tampa, FL, is the recipient of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and
Management (APhA-APPM) 2010 Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence
Award. Buffington was recognized at the APhA Annual Meeting and
Exposition in Washington, DC. Established to honor Daniel B.
Smith, APhA’s first president, the award recognizes outstanding
performance and achievements of a pharmacist in any practice setting who
has distinguished himself or herself and the profession of pharmacy.
Buffington was selected in recognition of his significant
contributions to the advancement of pharmacist-provided patient care
services and his tireless dedication to ensuring that pharmacists
implement and promote programs that demonstrate improved treatment
outcomes. He is recognized as a role model and has been instrumental in
leading the profession in the area of payment for pharmacist-provided
services. Buffington is a faculty member at the University of South
Florida (USF) College of Medicine and is the medical director of
Clinical Pharmacology Services, a specialty practice in Tampa, FL.
In the nomination for Buffington a colleague of stated, “Dr.
Buffington has been and continues to be an innovative and inspirational
force in pharmacy. His wisdom and foresight will benefit all pharmacists
who are exposed to him and his message. This is particularly true for
those of us venturing into the practice of Medication Therapy
Management.”
Buffington completed his undergraduate studies at USF and received a
PharmD from Mercer University School of Pharmacy. He went on to complete
a clinical practice residency and a clinical pharmacology research
fellowship at Emory University Hospital. Buffington developed the
pharmacist-based consult service and clinical research practice in 1991
to provide patient care services, clinical trial management, and drug
information support.
Buffington’s practice has been nationally recognized for
providing advanced medication therapy management services to patients
receiving chronic or high-risk medications. In addition, Buffington has
developed clinical software focusing on drug regimen analysis, patient
assistance programs, and medical claims analysis. He is also a
nationally recognized forensics expert in areas of pharmacy practice,
prescribing, and clinical toxicology.
Buffington serves on the national Pharmacist Services Technical
Advisory Coalition (PSTAC) and represents pharmacists in the American
Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
Editorial Panel, which has been integral to the development of medical
billing codes for pharmacists. In addition, he has received numerous
state and national awards, including the Florida Pharmacist of the Year
Award, APhA Foundation Pinnacle Award, American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists Award of Excellence, and the APhA-APPM Distinguished
Achievement Award in Clinical/ Pharmacotherapeutic Practice.
