Marialice S. Bennett Selected for APhA's
Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award
WASHINGTON,
DC – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA)
announces that Marialice S. Bennett, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy
Practice at The Ohio State University's (OSU) College of Pharmacy, is
the recipient of the 2009 APhA Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor
Award. The award will be presented during the APhA Annual Meeting
and Exposition, in San Antonio, Texas, April 3-6, 2009.
The award, named for
the noted pharmacy leader and former APhA staff member Gloria Niemeyer
Francke, was established in 1993 to recognize an individual who has
promoted and encouraged pharmacists to attain leadership positions
through example, acting as a role model and mentor. APhA's Awards and
Honors Program is American pharmacy's most comprehensive recognition
program.
Bennett is being
recognized for her numerous contributions to the profession including
many years of service as a teacher, practitioner, scholar and a mentor
for students, residents and junior faculty at OSU. Since 1973, Bennett
has taught numerous didactic and experiential courses to BS Pharmacy and
PharmD students and was promoted to Professor of Clinical Pharmacy
Practice in 2006. During this time she helped to develop an innovative
program for residents and fellows entitled "Teaching Mentor Program and
Teaching Roundtables," which now also serves new faculty and graduate
students and is modeled by other pharmacy schools.
In a nomination
letter one of Bennett's colleagues said, "Through her mentoring,
graduating pharmacists and residents will create a generation of new
pharmacists who have valuable skills in advanced direct patient care
services in community/ambulatory pharmacy."
In 1996, Bennett
established the Community/Ambulatory Care Practice Residency at OSU.
Through her leadership and guidance the program has gone from one
resident at one practice site to a nationally recognized program of
eight residents at seven practice sites within two separate focus areas:
an accredited Community Pharmacy Residents Program and an accredited
Ambulatory Care Residency Program. Since 2002, Bennett has served as the
residency director and has personally mentored 44 residents either as a
preceptor or director within the program. Her excellence as a residency
preceptor was formally recognized by APhA in 2004 when she received the
first Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting
Award.
In recognition of her
teaching at OSU, Bennett has twice received the Miriam Balshone Award
for Distinguished Teaching given to one faculty member each year.
In 1997, she received the OSU Medical Center's Excellence in Community
Health Education Award. And, in 1997 and 2000 she was selected as
faculty member of the year for the college of pharmacy doctor of
pharmacy program.
